Renowned bio-dynamic producer Johan Reyneke of Reyneke Wines – the big winner at the Nedbank Green Wine Awards held in association with Wine magazine – will be leading a public tasting of the top-rated wines in the competition in Johannesburg.
The awards showcase the country's most highly rated wines made from organically grown grapes and demonstrate just how organic wines have come into their own as the industry matures. Following worldwide trends, more and more consumers are going organic as it is good for both individual and environmental health. However, this does not mean that quality is sacrificed.

The Reyneke Woolworths Chenin Blanc 2009 was voted the Best Organic Wine at the Nedbank Green Wine Awards. It also won in the best white wine category, while the Reyneke Reserve Red 2007 was tops in the best red wine category. The best natural sweet award went to the Stellar Heaven on Earth Natural Sweet from Stellar Winery.

Reyneke Wines showed that they can compete with anything in the marketplace. The Reyneke Reserve Red 2008 received a five star rating in the 2011 Platter's Guide to SA wines, becoming the country's first biodynamic five- star wine. The Reyneke Reserve White (Sauvignon Blanc) 2009 received four and a half stars. It also received a gold medal at the Tri Nations Wine Challenge.

Meanwhile Stellar Winery, South Africa's biggest organic wine producer, is now the number one organic wine brand in the all important UK market and the largest producer of no-sulphur-added wines in the world. At the International Wine Challenge Trophy Awards, Stellar's Heaven on Earth won the inaugural Fairtrade Award for the best Fairtrade wine in the 2010 Challenge.

The tasting is open to the public and will take place in Johannesburg at the Sandton Sun Hotel on 3 March at 6.30pm.

Tickets cost R150 per person (Wine magazine subscribers pay R130) and can be booked by calling 0860 100 203 or by sending an email to subs@ramsaymedia.co.za.

The following wines will be tasted:

  • Reyneke Woolworths Chenin Blanc 2009: Citrus and an attractive leesy character on the nose. The palate is rich and textured with good fruit expressions.
  • Stellar Reserve Semillon 2009: Bold capsicum/ green pepper aroma that carries from the nose to the palate. Tangy, crisp acidity makes for a lively mouthful. The typical cut grass flavour of Semillon is backed by a full, rounded body which remains in the mouth long after the wine has been enjoyed.
  • Spier Recycle Organic Sauvignon Blanc 2010: Passion fruit and some dustiness on the nose. The palate is rich and full but not sweet and possessing.
  • Bon Cap Viognier 2009: It displays very intense, and upfront, honey blossom, spicy, dried peach and apricot flavours with subtle hints of typical musky Viognier aromas.
  • Groot Parys Die Tweede Droom Ongehout Chenin Blanc 2010: This wine shows peach, apricot and some leesy character on the nose, while the palate is very expressive with creamy texture and tangy acidity.
  • Reyneke Reserve Red 2007: Red fruit, some fynbos and lots of earthy developed character on the nose. The palate is rich and dense with good depth of flavour and firm tannins.
  • Laibach Ladybird Red 2009: The 2007 vintage of this wine from Stellenbosch winery Laibach was judged best red at the 2009 Nedbank Green Wine Awards. The 2009 is medium-bodied with juicy dark fruit, fresh acidity and fine tannins.
  • Bergwater Shiraz 2008: A deep, plum red wine with a distinctive smoky character and elegant berries and pepper aromas on the nose. A subtle, integrated oak flavour complements the soft tannin edges.
  • Stellar Heaven on Earth Natural Sweet: Dried apricot, rooibos and honey on the nose. Luscious palate with juicy fruit and soft but sufficient acidity.
