Vergelegen, the 300-year-old prizewinning wine estate in Somerset West, is offering guided environmental walks on its extensive grounds with resident conservation consultant Gerald Wright.
A maximum number of 16 people are invited on each two-hour walk (16 July and 13 August) followed by a continental breakfast at the estate’s Lady Phillips restaurant. The total cost is R95/person.

Wright will select a route, depending on the day’s weather, from several options:
Wetland areas and rehabilitation project: Some 910 hectares have been cleared and 316 hectares of pristine fynbos restored in line with a 10-year, R14million management plan to clear 2200ha of estate property.

Bontebok camp: Discussions about the vegetation, as well as an international project involving the Universities of Marburg (Germany), Bristol (UK) and Stellenbosch. The main aim at this stage is to establish social structure within various antelope groups.

Nguni Cattle: A discussion about the history of these indigenous African cattle and their role at Vergelegen – the estate herd numbers over 50.

Walking in Lourensriver area: Discussions about this pristine river, its effect on vegetation, birdlife, and fish.

Dates: Wednesday 16 July and 13 August

Cost: R95/person

Venue: Meet at the Wine Tasting Centre, Vergelegen, Lourensford Road, Somerset West.
