Babylonstoren invites guests to Rietvlei, home to the farm’s herd of water buffalo, for a new hands-on tour that awakens all five senses and draws visitors into the rhythms of working farm life.
The Water Buffalo Tour is more than an opportunity to see these impressive animals up close. It is a sensory experience that invites adults and children alike to become part of the farm’s daily pace, from the journey to Rietvlei to the sounds, scents, tastes, and textures awaiting arrival.
From the moment guests depart from the Babylonstoren Ticket Office for the short shuttle transfer to Rietvlei, the senses are engaged. Fresh farm air, the smells of the farm and the sound of the road create an immediate connection to the realities of farming.
Upon arrival, guests are introduced to the water buffalo and the daily operations of the dairy. From the impressive size and presence of the animals to the constant movement around the dairy, there is always something to take in. Guests will enjoy a milking demonstration, the opportunity to bottle-feed a calf and, where possible, lend a hand with grooming.
Sound plays an unexpected role in the experience. Against the backdrop of a busy working farm, classical music is played for the herd – proof, perhaps, that farmers are sensitive, tech-savvy souls too. Inspired by an Italian farm he discovered online, farmer Kobus Lambrechts introduced classical music to help keep the water buffalo relaxed and content, creating a gentle contrast between the movement of the dairy and the calm temperament of the animals.
Taste is introduced around a shared table, where guests are invited to discover a selection of delicious products, mainly made from water buffalo milk. A warm coffee is followed by an unexpected cold surprise, adding a playful moment of discovery, particularly for younger guests.
The sense of touch comes to life during a clay activity, where guests are encouraged to get their hands dirty. It is a simple, grounding moment that connects visitors to the hands-on character of farm life and gives children the freedom to explore and create.
Throughout the tour, contrasts continually emerge. There is the contrast between the size and strength of the water buffalo and the calmness that surrounds them. The farm is bustling with activity, yet a peaceful atmosphere remains. There are contrasts in temperature, temperament, texture and sound.
The experience is also a personal one. Each water buffalo has its own name and distinct personality, allowing guests to connect with the animals beyond simply observing them. For children, this adds another layer of interaction and makes the animals feel like characters to get to know.
Ultimately, the Water Buffalo Tour is a grounded farm experience that invites guests to see, hear, taste, smell and touch – and, in doing so, to experience Rietvlei in a memorable way.
