Learn the ancient art of bookbinding at this workshop on 19 September and 31 October 2026 at Soetmelksvlei, presented by Marianne Cronjé.

There is something magical about running your fingers over the spine of a hand-bound book. Learn to make your own in this beginner workshop at Soetmelksvlei. We’ll explore the Japanese style of binding, known for its simplicity and beauty. It is a wonderful introduction to traditional craftsmanship.

Following a short ride along the picturesque slopes of Simonsberg, we’ll descend towards the historical farmyard of Soetmelksvlei, which represents a time when life was simpler and craftsmanship was treasured. Here, Babylonstoren designer and master bookbinder Marianne Cronjé will share her secrets and help you construct a personalised book.

Each participant will bind their own book to take home. Bookbinding is a valuable and fun skill. Handmade notebooks make meaningful and unique gifts, at the same time promoting sustainability and the use of natural materials.

Please meet us at the Babylonstoren ticket office at 08h30.

After a hands-on morning, we’ll enjoy a hearty lunch at the Old Stables Restaurant before heading back to Babylonstoren.
