Dirtopia’s Sunset to Full Moon Hike invites you to enjoy a marked trail at Muratie Wine Estate to the lookout point above the cellar, as the sun dips below the horizon and the moon begins its gentle rise. It’s a beautiful way to have a bit of an adventure, connect with nature, and soak up the atmosphere of an early Autumn evening on the mountain.
Bring along a picnic and enjoy breathtaking views with a glass of Muratie’s award-winning wine at the top. After sunset, continue the adventure as the trail winds back through the forest, illuminated by your headlamp under the full moon.
The circular route takes hikers on a marked route of 3.5 km in total and with over 200 hand-built steps. It takes 30 to 45 minutes to the look-out going up, depending on your pace of course. Plan your arrival anytime from 4.45 pm at the Trail Centre, but no later than 5.30pm.
The marked hiking trail leads to a lookout point, where you can marvel at views of Simonsberg, the Winelands, and even Table Mountain. Here, you can buy four Muratie wines from the MCC, Dry Rose, Sauvignon Blanc or the Melck’s Dry Red blend.
After sunset and moonrise (by 18h45), it only takes about 20 to 30 minutes back to Dirtopia Trail Centre.
What to bring:
- A backpack with your own food/picnic and blanket for the lookout point.
- Jacket/sweater for after dark.
- A torch or headlamp.
- Good walking or hiking shoes for varied terrain.
What to expect:
- Muratie wines by the glass or bottle is available at the look-out.
- Snacks like chips and energy bars and cooldrinks are on sale at the Trail Centre, where you’ll also collect your permit on arrival.

- Return to Trail Centre: 19h00-19h30, depending on your pace
