OCTOBER IS MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH.
Local composer and vocal coach, Andre Strijdom, has based the SUIDERKRUISMIS on the five parts of the traditional Catholic Mass. It combines popular genres to celebrate multicultural South Africa. The Mass is sung in English, Latin, Afrikaans, Xhosa and Chechewa (Malawian). This masterful work is layered with textures of authentic and classical voices, supported by orchestral as well as electric rock instruments.
This year the Suiderkruismis ensemble is being joined by the colourful Holy Voices Choir from Asanda Village in Zola, Strand.
It is a truly ubuntu experience that aims to encourage collaborative ventures and raise spirits - which it most certainly will.
The profit from the concert will go towards the work of the Helderberg Counselling Centre in Somerset West where various counselors donate their time to see people from the community who are going through emotionally challenging times. Services include counseling, workshops, support groups, mediation, and play-based therapy with children. All services are offered by volunteers who include lay counselors, doctors, psychologists, and a psychiatrist, with the aim to enable people on their mental health journey.
Our dream is to have this Suiderkruismis concert on an annual basis for our long term project, The Luhani Community Clinic (NPO), a desperately needed in-patient community mental health facility in the Helderberg area. But for right now we are appealing to the Helderberg community and businesses to help us with donations towards the expenses of this concert in October, so that as much as possible of the money raised by ticket sales can go towards the outreach work of the Helderberg Counseling Centre.
