The Hazendal Festival on 5 October brings together artists, scientists, and cultural practitioners to think, create and debate together about important dynamics affecting our shared world.

The festival’s first Soil Edition is curated by the international South African curator Khanyisile Mbongwa who brought together leaders in the fields of art, music, culture, fashion, theatre, dance and academia to reflect on the cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary meanings of soil.

Mbongwa has crafted a thought-provoking and multi-sensory program spanning the weekend of October 4-6 which will feature live music and theatre performances, fine dining, an academic symposium, an art exhibition, immersive workshops, and a thoughtful children’s programme. Commissioned works will include a sculptural installation by Thania Petersen, an interventional procession by Sethembile Msezane, a land and sound constellation by Sisonke Papu, as well as the launch of the limited edition MCC label by Athi-Patra Ruga.

Mbongwa’s programme will be guided by the Nguni proverb “Belele nje, Abathulunga” which in English translates to “They may be asleep but they are not quiet” and in Afrikaans to “Hulle slap dalk, maar hulle is nie still nie”. Reflecting on the interconnected themes of land, belonging, and repair – the programme invites attendees to reflect on the topics of love, grief, and healing.

We are looking forward to welcoming you to Hazendal Wine Estate to experience Mbongwa’s care-centred and cure-driven programme for the Hazendal Festival | Soil Edition. Please note that your choice of experiences can be added to your online basket after you have added the festival ticket.

Family experiences

The Little Humans Symposium, running on both Saturday and Sunday, offers a light-hearted and thoughtful educational experience for children with crafts workshops led by artist Faatimah Mohamed-Luke and interactive theatre performances by children’s theatre collective ASSITEJ.

Please note that we curated the timings of the Little Humans Symposium for adults to enjoy the picnic on the Hazendal Lawns together with the children before or after the children’s programme, or for the adults to be able to join the academic symposium running alongside the children’s events.

Family picnics

While the children enjoy the Little Humans Symposium, adults are invited to enjoy a live music programme on the Hazendal Lawns with a picnic-collaboration by our Head Chef Michelle Theron and fine-dining Chef Vusi Ndlovu of EDGE Restaurant Group.

Sensory experience

The Sensory Experience, taking place on both Saturday and Sunday, offers two multi-sensual experiences curated by Khanyisile Mbongwa:

Option 1: Sensual Experience with Dinner by fine-dining Chef Vusi Ndlovu of EDGE Restaurant Group

In the first option, the evening will begin with a West African movement constellation by somatic practitioner Kafui Awoono, followed by an indigenous roping and ice cream session led by molecular biologist and somatic artist Tapiwa Guzha. This sensual experience continues with a dinner by fine-dining Chef Vusi Ndlovu of EDGE Restaurant Group paired with fine Hazendal wines at the hotel restaurant. Live music by Zolani Mahola and Tebogo Louw will follow on the Hazendal Lawns with evening ending with a late night turn tables with sets by DJ Daddy and DJ Phatstoki.

Option 2: Wine and Vodka Tasting by Drag Artist Queezy Babaz

In the second option, the evening will also begin with a West African movement constellation by somatic practitioner Kafui Awoonor, followed by an indigenous roping and ice cream session led by molecular biologist and somatic artist Tapiwa Guzha.
