The time-honoured art of Ikebana can be translated to "making flowers alive". It is also known as kadō which means, "way of flowers". In this hands-on introduction to the ancient Japanese floral art of Ikebana, we show you the Babylonstoren "way of flowers" by combining the evocative Japanese styling method with the abundance of the Babylonstoren garden. The class kicks off with a walk-through of the garden where participants get to pick plant material for their flower arrangements.
From there, the styling workshop is led by Belinda Soboil, a certified teacher from the Ohara-ryū School of Ikebana. The experience includes a brief introduction to the art, as well as a demonstration of a few arrangements to inspire the floral fundi’s in attendance. Each guest will then have the opportunity to take create their own arrangements to take home.
Included for the class:
- All flower and branch materials
- Notes on Ikebana arrangements
- One kenzan or floral frog per person
Please bring along:
- Low bowl (something with a wide mouth, preferably in ceramic/brass/copper rather than clear glass, could be a tea or cereal bowl)
- Tall vase (again preferably not clear glass) with a narrow opening
- Pair of secateurs
Steaming coffee from our Lekker Room is served upon arrival.
