The Nedbank Vinpro Information Day, with the theme Revive. Recover. Rebuild will be held from 09:00 to 13:00 on 20 January 2022. Limited seating is available for physical attendance at Allée Bleue, Franschhoek, with the event being livestreamed for virtual attendance as well.

“The South African wine industry will rise up again to reach its full potential following one of the toughest periods yet,” says Vinpro MD Rico Basson. “At the Nedbank Vinpro Information Day we will examine the next steps each individual and business in our value-chain need to take to achieve our vision towards a more robust, competitive, profitable and sustainable industry.”

The event will be hosted as two themed back-to-back sessions of 100 minutes each, with a 30-minute break.

Session 1: From consumer to farm

The South African wine industry’s Covid-19 recovery plan includes stimulating the demand by driving exports and growing local sales and revenue through wine tourism. Wine grape producers and wineries are also increasingly adopting a consumer-focused approach in the vineyard and cellar while innovating for efficiency.

Lulie Halstead, CEO of Wine Intelligence, a global market research and strategy consultancy, will kick-off the first session with a review of consumer trends that will continue beyond Covid-19, globally and in South Africa. Vinpro wine tourism manager Marisah Nieuwoudt will share milestones in the wine tourism sector over the past four years, as well as actionable insights that will contribute to a more competitive and sustainable industry going forward.

As the economy recovers from the impact of the pandemic, wine businesses have an opportunity to rebuild with more balanced models. Conrad Schutte, Vinpro’s consultation service manager, will share insights into the upcoming harvest and look into smart production trends that will shape your business in 2022 and beyond.

Session 2: The bigger picture

Taking a step back in the second session, two knowledgeable panels will discuss the macro-environmental factors that influence wine-related businesses, and how it can navigate these forces to ensure that they remain on course.

For the South African wine industry to survive and thrive, it needs to focus on the planet and people, as well as profit. We take a look at case studies and gain perspectives on what is being done, and can be done more effectively to improve inclusive growth, sustainability and ethical practices. Bruce Jack, owner of Bruce Jack Wines; Bridgitte Backman, vice president of Communications and Public Policy and Government Affairs (PPGA) at PepsiCo; and Ronald Ramabulana, chair of the SA Wine Industry Transformation Unit (SAWITU) will address this topic.

The South African wine industry was hit hard by the effects of Covid-19 which brought with it a whole new set of challenges to address. Constantly striving to promote growth, we look at the current state of the wine industry within the context of much needed economic growth and policy certainty, underpinned by political will. Panellists unpacking this topic include Vinpro MD Rico Basson, Nedbank Group chief economist Nicky Weimar and well-known political analyst and former editor of the Sowetan, Mpumelelo Mkhabela.
