Acclaimed South African soprano Zanne Stapelberg, joined by New York-based pianist and cellist, Kathleen Tagg will be performing at Uitkyk Estate, one of the most gracious and historic homesteads in Stellenbosch, on Sunday, August 29 at 18:30. Their exciting “Celebration of Song” progra
Stapelberg trained with Magdalena Oosthuizen at the University of Stellenbosch and graduated in 1998 with a degree in music and English literature, obtained her higher licentiate in musical performance cum laude from the same university in 1999 and in 2000 became a member of the Cape Town Opera Studio.

From the time she earned the coveted “Best Young Opera Singer” award from Cape Town Friends of the Opera, in 2001, she has become one of the most sought-after artists on the South African opera circuit. Highlights include her portrayal of Marguerite in Cape Town Opera’s innovative production of Gounod’s Faust; the title role in Handel’s Alcina and Rosalinda in Strauss’ popular operetta, Die Fledermaus; as well as her participation in Bravo! A Night at the Opera, at the Durban Playhouse. In 2004 she appeared in Cape Town City Ballet’s electrifying Queen at the Ballet and, due to popular demand, again in 2005 and 2006. In 2008 she won the Standard Bank Young Artist Award and has performed to huge acclaim all over the globe.

Since her first radio broadcast at the age of seven, cellist and pianist Kathleen Tagg has played an active role in South Africa’s music world. She studied at the University of Cape Town, moved to New York in 2001 and studied at the Mannes College of Music and the Manhattan School of Music where she completed her doctoral degree, also receiving the Helen Cohn Award as the most outstanding doctoral graduate.

She regularly performs at New York’s Carnegie Hall and venues such as the Lincoln Center and the Goethe Institute. She also appears on stage in Europe, India and Zimbabwe, as well as throughout South Africa. Concerto performances have been with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, CAPAB Orchestra, Cape Baroque Ensemble and the University of Cape Town Orchestra.

With her interest in new music, Kathleen has premiered several original works, many written for her, including works for piano and electronics. She also performs her own works, and loves experimenting with the capabilities of electronic music in conjunction with acoustic instruments.

Uitkyk Estate is situated on the R44 between Stellenbosch and Paarl.
