Join us at Soetmelksvlei for a day of crocheting with needleworker Doortjie Gersbach on 28 August and 25 September 2026.

Ever dreamt of creating a handmade blanket, or perhaps a beautiful scarf of your own design? Join us at Soetmelksvlei to master the art of crochet with needleworker Doortjie Gersbach.

Following a short ride along the picturesque slopes of Simonsberg, we’ll descend towards the historical farmyard of Soetmelksvlei, which represents a time when life was simpler and craftsmanship was treasured.

NOTE: Guests need to know the three basic stitches (chain stitch, single and double crochet) before attending this hands-on workshop.

Under Doortjie’s guidance, we’ll then learn to crochet select heritage crochet patterns – used by grandmothers and great-grandmothers before us. Doortjie will also share how to set up and finish stitches in a neat fashion while using colour to show this handcraft at its best.

After a hands-on morning, we’ll enjoy a hearty lunch at the Old Stables Restaurant before heading back to Babylonstoren.
