“I find it harder and harder every day to live up to my blue china,” said Oscar Wilde. What did he mean, and what is blue china?

This workshop takes its inspiration from the broken pieces of blue and white ceramics that have been found around Babylonstoren and collected over the years. They have also been interpreted as a symbolic motif in the garden.

But there are several types of “blue china”, made in different places at different times. How do archaeologists tell the difference between them and how do they name them?

Join historical archaeologist Antonia Malan and Liesl van der Walt for a walk through the garden to learn more about the fascinating history of our blue china.

Steaming coffee from our Lekker Room is served upon arrival. Lunch in the Spice House is included.
