Wine collectors will be offered the unique opportunity to secure rare vintage and limited-edition wines straight from KWV’s wine vault during the Auction at the KWV Cathedral Cellar on 2 December 2023. Furthermore, in the spirit of giving back, a portion of the proceeds from the sales will be dedicated to supporting upliftment projects in the Western Cape through Valcare, a non-profit organisation and long-standing partner of KWV.
Collaborating with esteemed auctioneers Stephan Welz & Co, this distinguished event is a first for KWV, whose cellaring facility represents a treasure trove of historic wines – some of which will now come under the hammer, presided over respected auctioneer Anton Welz.
“The Auction at Cathedral Cellar presents a unique chance for wine collectors to acquire wines with an impeccable pedigree, where every aspect of their origin, journey, and storage has been flawlessly maintained,” says Welz, emphasising the paramount importance of provenance in wine buying.
Bidders can look forward to securing a piece of history with the legendary KWV Vintage Port 1929, of which only a limited number of bottles remain in KWV’s impeccably maintained cellaring facilities. Additionally, the prestigious 1949 Port, historically awarded the Museum Class Trophy at the Trophy Wine Show and a Double Gold (museum class) from Veritas, will be a highlight of the auction.
In addition to these exciting lots, bidders will have the privilege of competing for limited-edition wines from KWV's Roodeberg and flagship The Mentors brand. “These wines have consistently shone in competitions, achieving sought-after status and becoming noticeably scarce in the market. Each bottle has undergone a delicate evolution of their characters which now reveal the depth they promised when first released,” says The Mentors winemaker, Izele van Blerk.
